What does antenatal mean?

Antenatal refers to the period of time from conception up to birth.

Antenatal care typically includes:

  • Antenatal appointments with a midwife.

  • Antenatal classes, which despite the definition of antenatal, usually also include information on postpartum and newborn care.

  • Ultrasound scans. Usually two scans unless there are any concerns about mother or baby. If there are no concerns and you wish to have additional scans, you will have to pay privately.

  • Fetal heartbeat monitoring.

  • Blood pressure checks.

  • Urine samples.
