What does postpartum mean?
Postpartum usually refers to the period from giving birth up to 8 weeks after birth, and specifically refers to the person who has given birth.
Postpartum includes the physical, hormonal, psychological and emotional affects of giving birth.
Although postpartum is most commonly thought of as those first 8 weeks after giving birth, a woman is technically in postpartum for as long as there are hormonal affects on the body and mind. Therefore, postpartum actually lasts for much longer than 8 weeks, varying between women. For some, this will last until after they have finished breastfeeding.
